When we get back past living memory, often we don't quite know our ancestors. And then sometimes we find a record that shows them in the life -- letters or a pension file. What records have you found that revivified your people?

I found a letter written by my great-great-great-grandfather to the secretary of justice. My ggggrandfather was a constable and had just been transferred from a rural area of the Netherlands to Amsterdam. His wife was so homesick that he wrote a pleading letter to the secretary begging to be re-transferred. That letter is one of my favorite finds.
